Production Pipeline

Documenting & Scope

I was inspired by "Toy Story" and "It Takes Two" to create this level.

I start with the walkthrough document. I wanted it to be a short and complete story by itself, so I spent more time on designing the plots and dialogues.

Then, based on the walkthrough, created the sketch of top-down map and level timeline.

Preproduction Package

For the preproduction package, I made adjustment for the top-down map.

On the original sketch was a very squared room, which can be confusing for the player to tell the direction. I made adjustment on the window and balcony, giving them angles to avoid possible problem.

I also created the asset list, to clarify the elements needed for the finished level.

Last, I gathered photos and artwork on Pinterest as the reference for environment.

Level Blockout, Popcorn Trail, IGCs, and Lighting

I started with simple cubes and cylinders to build up the room and bigger props such as table and chair. The main character is a tiny spirit, so all blocks are 10 times bigger.

This time, I use the skylight and the window to create interesting lighting and shadows, which makes the room more alive.

Creating the popcorn trail is tricky for this level, because the player needs to jump through the platform a lot. I used cubes and cylinders in different sizes first, and replace them with props.

Finally, I invited the actors I worked with before to record the lines and use data table to put them into the sequences. It is not just a level design piece, but also a cute and warm story!
